Three Generations of Cultural Growth and Discovery

Children love pampering. You may make your sweet little heart look fabulous by looking into making her wear beautiful children costumes and classy shoes. I didn't grow up in the most open-mided of households. Don't get me wrong: My family is filled with good, hardworking people who immigrated to America from a small island in the Caribbean. But back home, everyone was pretty much like them. They looked and spoke alike, and shared the same belief system. As a result of their background, when they met or interacted with someone of different race or upbringing, my family put their guard up. The unfamiliar made them nervous, and without knowing it, they were in danger of passing that along to me.

Today my parents, American citizens for decades, are very different. They've shared experiences with all kinds of people. Theis island life has been replaced by one full colors, languages and opportunities. That beautiful mosaic is something my son, Javier, has always known. While driving home from school the other day, he was telling me about Martin Luther King, Jr., and about how things used to be: "Mommy, do you know there was a time when Dallas wouldn't have been able to sit next to us in the move theater? Isn't that crazy?"

He rightly thought this was absurd. It was one of my proudest parenting moments, and it made me realize just how far my family has come. Times have changed, families like mine have transformed themselves, but we still have work to do. In honor of this constantly evolving world, where we are more connected to our global neighbors than ever, we created our very first Culture Issue. And it's about more than simply teaching children about appreciation and acceptance. This issue celebrates our global culture on a wide scale, from how to foster a love of the arts to getting your kids to try paella in lieu of pizza, or simply try suit new clothes.

The time to learn, discover, evolve and grow is now. After all, the world is only getting smaller and the expectations for our kids are only getting higher.
